Ivory netsuke of a nio
Ikkosai Toun

Crouching and turning the upper stone of a millstone; alternatively attempting to break a mochi into two pieces.

Signed beneath the lower stone: Ikkosai
Height: 3.9 cm

A variant of the subject by Ikkosai, from the Tomkinson, Guest and Storno collections, was sold at Bonhams New York, March 19th 2013, lot 2153 ($11,875).  There is speculation that there may well have been two generations of Ikkosai.  If so, the fine incised decoration of this netsuke suggests the earlier.
