Ivory abstract netsuke
Ono Ryomin

Attributed to Ono Ryomin

A pleasing ying-yang carved in three dimensions, occasionally said to represent a rice cake (mochi), though to my mind more similar to the shape into which the Japanese cut chestnuts.

Unsigned
Early 20th century
Length: 4.5cm

Compare with a similar netsuke, signed Ryomin, formerly in the Walter Behrens collection and illustrated with a drawing in Meinertzhagen’s Card Index, MCI, p. 658
