Project Description
3-case softwood inro by Kajikawa family
Simply lacquered with an inscription which may be translated: Mt Fuji sits in the distance, omitted from the One Hundred Famous Views
Signed engimatically in sosho script by a “two tatami-mat master” with seals for persimmon and jar
Also signed beneath: Kajikawa with red seal. Circa 1800
Height: 7.9 cm
Information:
This is a very Japanese object indeed with its verbal reference to an unseen Mt. Fuji and to Hiroshige’s series of 100 views of Edo, which do not include the mountain. One takes the reference to two tatami mats to mean that the writer belongs to those who appreciate the beauty of rustic simplicity
