The oni cowering face down, the rat on its back attacking it with holly. The ivory has a rich deep colour underneath

Information:

This represents Shiro, an attendant of Emma-ō, who was despatched to steal Daikoku’s rice. Hearing him approach, the god’s rats rushed out and beat the oni back with a branch of holly. Compare with an example signed Minko in A. Katchen, ‘Netsuke 7’, vol. 1, pp. 184-185, no. K690
