Project Description
A Partially Lacquered Three Tiered Wood Box
Probably intended for paper. The unusual wood has a surface suggestive of a cloudy sky. The cover is decorated in hiramakie with a traveler seated on the ground beside his staff looking up at a thin crescent moon of inlaid silver beside sparse lacquer clouds. Each tier of the box has a different line of repeat decoration: kamome (stylised seagulls), kadomatsu (New year young pine), cherry blossoms on water. The interiros are well lacquered with mura-nashiji, the underside of the cover with maple leaves on water
