A Woven Rattan Tonkotsu by Tanabe Chikuunsai I (1887-1937)

Skilfully and sturdily woven,  the exterior with split uprights, some of them partly lacquered black, red and gold for effect. Exterior cord runners

With simple bamboo ojime and a woven rattan manju netsuke suggestive of a kiku flower

Original tomobako with extensive hakogaki, too extensive to render in full here

Provenance:

Made for the actor Soganoya Goro (1877-1948), delivered in the new year of Taisho 12 (1923)

Subsequently given by him to a Mr. Kusumoto, 1926

The shape of the tonkotsu is based on an armour box, and the coloured elements on the sides are reused arrow shafts
