Project Description

Boxwood Netsuke of a Flying Bat by Horaku

Flying, with its wings touching above it.  The manner of carving the face, with inlaid dark horn eyes and single cut for the mouth, is typical of Horaku

Unsigned. Kyoto circa 1850

Length: 3.5 cm

Information:

I have seen at least two versions of the subject in ebony.  One of them was in the Marcel Lorber collection, sold at Sotheby’s London, 12th June 1986, lot 14, illustrated p. 23, as well as in Netsuke Kenkyukai Society Journal, 6/3, p. 25. It may or may not be the same as one in the Michel Edde collection, illustrated in the catalogue as no. 137. Another passed through my hands on two occasions
