Project Description
Boxwood Netsuke of a Recumbent Goat, Attributed to Tametaka
Lying with its head turned back, scratching its chin with a hind hoof. All of its legs are bent in almost impossible positions. The horns are joined to the ears and touch the back, lending solidity to the structure of the netsuke
Unsigned. Circa 1800
Length: 4.2 cm
This is the sixth goat which I have had pass through my hands, signed by or attributed to Tametaka. What strikes me about them is the variety of compositions and physiognomies, as well as the complex play of legs, often bent and twisted into anatomically impossible positions
