Boxwood Netsuke of Oni Trapping Shoki by Kano Tomokazu
Oni looking determined as he presses down on the large basket beneath which Shoki is flattened, looking startled and distinctly displeased. The demon queller’s hair and beard are stained darker, all eyes and buttons are inlays of bone, and the kojiri of the sword is horn. Shoki’s right leg is cleverly contrived as the cord attachment
Compare with a similar netsuke with Shoki looking slightly to one side in Ducros, Netsuke & Sagemono 2, pp. 82-83, no. 121. Alongside he illustrates the weaker version by Tadakazu
