Characterful boxwood netsuke of a shaggy goat by Ittan

Resting comfortably with all its legs tucked in, these providing the himotoshi

The Ittan goat illustrated with a drawing in Meinertzhagen’s card index is clearly derived from a Minko model, while the present netsuke is closer in spirit to Tametaka, but with all the precision of observation typical of the mid 19th century Nagoya carvers
