Four-case Brown Lacquer Inro with a Stag by Shiomi Masanari
Decorated in low relief takamakie with a running stag and windswept suzuki grass on the slope of a mountain. The fur of the deer is remarkably well rendered by textures in the gold lacquer

Compare with a similar inro by the artist in 1904 catalogue of the C. Gillot collection, the signature given with its alternative reading of Masazane, no. 415, illustrated opp. p. 100. W.L. Behrens had a variant with sasa bamboo in place of the grasses (Joly, no. 612, illustrated on pl. XXXIII, in which the author comments: “pelt exquisitely treated”)
