Project Description
Good Small Boxwood Netsuke of Fukura Suzume by Toshishige
Better carved than many variants of this model, with the shocked expression of a bird just deprived of its tongue, legs in slight relief, and himotoshi of different sizes. The eyes are inlays of dark buffalo horn
Signed. First half 19th century
Width: 4 cm
This is a rare signature, recorded by Fuld on only one netsuke, a shojo dancer. We previously sold a Kiyohime with the signature and concluded that the artist must have been an apprentice of Tadatoshi, by whom another Kiyohime is illustrated in the ‘Meinertzhagen Card Index’, p. 933
