Hakata School Ivory Netsuke of Shoki and Oni

A very hirsute and angry Shoki holds the brim of his mushroom like hat while a small oni crouches above. Shoki’s eye balls are carved in relief, almost in the round, with large dark horn pupils

Provenance:

W.L. Behrens collection (no. 3264, illustrated on pl. XXXIX in the Joly catalogue, in which he comments: “The position of the sword is ludicrous in a netsuké, but the very powerful carving of the face is a redeeming feature)
