Project Description

Hinoki Wood Mask of Ja

Painted with an earthen red pigment over gesso with fine sparse hair, the cheeks with distinctive v-shaped markings suggestive of dragon’s whiskers, the eye balls of inset gilt copper

The horns possibly replaced. Losses of pigment, notably to the nose and left cheek

It is probable that this mask was not intended for the theatre, but perhaps as a temple offering, and that the inscription refers to a location (Nakabashichō) and an owner or donor (Tenya Jūbei)

Ink inscription to the reverse nakabashichō tenya jūbei. Mid Edo period, 17th to early 18th century

Height 26cm

Provenance:

Au Bon Marché, Paris (label from the early 20th century)

Much later in a private collection, Dublin
