Horn netsuke of a recumbent ox and young by Unsho Hakuryu I (Kyoto, died 1892) 

The mother more emaciated than most such models, it eyes of back painted crystal, its calf trying to suckle

Signed on a raised oval reserve: shohakuryu saku

Length: 6.2 cm

Information: 

The subject of ox and calf may be unique for Hakuryu in any material.  Fuld lists 6 single oxen, 4 of them wood, 1 in umimatsu (Christie’s New York, Bushell IV, 23rd April 1991, lot 88, and 1 in ivory
