Project Description

Impressive Humorous Stag Antler Netsuke of an Octopus

Clinging to the top of a rock. The eyes are flush inlays of dark buffalo horn

Unsigned. Circa 1870

Height: 9.3 cm

Information:

I think there may be a clue to the hand here in the holes drilled in the rock.  These remind me of a distinctive group of manju netsuke with a similar feature, usually more widely used. See Sotheby’s London catalogue of the Monzino collection, 21st June 1995, lot 175. Two other manju of animal subjects by this artist were in the Hahn collection (illustrated in Davies catalogue, nos. 158 and 159)
