Project Description

Ivory netsuke of a Chinese sage by Hoshin

Seated with a snake at his side.  The hands and face are long and elegant, the decoration of the robe typical of Yoshinaga. The snake’s eyes are inlays of dark horn

Signed beneath: Hoshin

Height: 4cm

This is a rare ivory figure netsuke by this highly proficient early master, mentioned in the Soken Kisho.  Meinertzhagen considered this a 19th century copy, an opinion with which I wholeheartedly disagree. For another, of a disappointed ratcatcher, see the Baur collection catalogue, no. C591
