Project Description
Ivory Netsuke of a Clam Shell, Attributed to Ohara Mitsuhiro
Carved from a well figured piece of pale ivory and inlaid with a sprig of aoi (hollyhock), the leaves of malachite, the stems and himotoshi linings of buffalo horn
Signed and with seal ohara. Osaka. Circa 1860
4.1 cm across
In my opinion, the signature is confidently incised, while the seal seems rather more hesitant. Inlaid work is not unknown in Mitsuhiro’s work. One has to think only of some of his fulling blocks with inlaid geese
