Project Description

Ivory Netsuke of a Karako on a Buffalo by Anrakusai

A masterfully carved netsuke of the subject, on a base, the boy using his flute as a goad. The boy’s hairdo has two knops of inlaid buffalo horn.  Much of the surface is worked and the staining is unusually subtle for the artist

Private collection, France

Information:

In my opinion this is a more successful variant than the one from the Guffanti collection illustrated in Hurtig’s ‘Masterpieces’, p. 83, no. 281. One from the Seymour Trower collection was sold at Sotheby’s London, 9th May 1973, lot 102
