Project Description

Ivory netsuke of a recumnet ox cow by Masanao of Kyoto

Looking to the right. The eyes are small inlays of dark horn

Signed beneath: Masanao. Kyoto, circa 1780

Length: 5.9 cm

The subject was not uncommon for Masanao, but unlike his contemporary Tomotada, the majority of oxen carrying his signature seem to have been carved by him. Although its head is not turned around as much, this is worth comparing with the Szechenyi example, sold in the sale at Bonhams London, 8th November 2011, lot 119
