A powerful carving of a classic subject, the lean wolf holding a haunch of venison, and with its ribs visible all down its back, staring ahead menacingly with fixed expression, the eyes inlaid in dark horn

Bearing a well written Tomotada signature. Kyoto, circa 1790

Firm attributions to Tomotada are difficult to make.  This bears many of the hallmarks of the work of his best apprentice, and fine artist in his own right, Okatomo
