Ivory Netsuke of Jurojin by Follower of Risuke Garaku

The god standing, smiling and holding an antler of the stag recumbent before him.  The stag’s eyes are inlaid in dark horn and the beard of the god and coat of the deer are stained

Signed beneath: Raku.  Osaka, before 1800

Height: 5.7 cm

The name Raku is associated with artists trained by, or associated with, Risuke Garaku of Osaka, working around 1800 and later.  For a very similar example, see, Victor Harris, Hull Grundy Collection in the British Museum, p. 26, no. 24
