Project Description

Kurogaki Inro carved with Jurojin and Urashima Taro by Yoshimasa

On one side the aged Urashima Taro rides the waves on his adopted turtle, holding an arm up as if to shield himself from Jurojin who flies in front of a waterfall on a crane on the other side.  There is much undercutting to the carving on the sides.  Small covers remove at top and bottom, allowing one to extract the compartmented inner sheath, the sliding cover of which is inlaid with a basket of peaches in stained woods

Signed. Circa 1880

Height: 7.8 cm

Information:

As the two legendary figures and the basket of peaches are all symbolic of longevity and immortality, one assumes that this must have been conceived as an auspicious gift
