Project Description

An Ivory Netsuke of Figures and Buildings in a Landscape, by Kagetoshi

A mounted courtier with his attendants rides past a temple complex. Birds fly ahead of them and on the other side peasants are at work. The underside is carved with bush clover by water, with the sun and rocks beyond

Signed.  Circa 1850

4.1 cm across

The mounted figure has previously been interpreted as the poet Narihira, which is probably correct as bush clover is associated with the mu tamagawa (6 Jewel Rivers)
