Standing with its forepaws on a diminutive table, twisting around and looking upwards. The slightly wild, close set eyes are enlivened with small inlaid pupils of dark buffalo horn
Added signature of Tomotada. Kansai. Circa 1790

While I do not believe the signature for a moment, the carver of this exceptional, dynamic sculpture is familiar to us from many netsuke, for example a shishi illustrate in Ducros, ‘Netsuke & Sagemono 2’, p. 50, no. 6
