Project Description

Prunus Wood Netsuke of a Fisherman Attacked by an Octopus, attributed to Rakumin

A smaller representation of the subject than some, the octopus emerging from the basket at the startled man’s back and already beginning to strangle him
Signature partly obscured. Edo. Circa 1830
Height: 3.1 cm
The signature is cut off by an oversized himotoshi, possibly enlarged later. The last character is clearly min. I am grateful to Hugues Vuillefroy de Silly for the plausible attribution to a follower of Miwa
Provenance:
André Spoerry collection, sold by Millon, Paris, 14th December 2018, lot 331
MR4102
