Rare Wood Netsuke of a Dragon by Miwa
Coiled around a large tama which it holds down firmly with one claw. The eyes are well executed double inlays of buffalo horn
Signed. Edo. Circa 1800
Width 4.3 cm
Fuld lists only 2 Miwa netsuke with a dragon, 1 of which is a representation of Chinnan sennin. The dragon on its own was in the Bess and Greenfield collections, illustrated in Moss, ‘Japanese Netsuke: Serious Art’, no. 6. It is very different.
