Project Description

Rare Wood Netsuke of Gama Sennin by Miwa Katsusuke

Allegedly carved from the relatively rare izu wood. The unpreposessing looking sennin seated with a mugwort leaf skirt spreading about him, one hand resting on a haunch, the other on the large toad behind him
Signed beneath: Miwa with kaō. Edo. Circa 1800
4 cm across
It would be difficult to improve on Paul Moss’s description or assessment of the carver (op.cit.). Suffice to say that he was almost certainly the second Miwa and used the name Katsuke [worthy follower] on only a handful of netsuke. Fuld, bless him, gives 3 entries for what is undoubtedly this same netsuke. A possible variant was in the Henri Vever collection, sold in his sale at Sotheby’s London, 27th March 1974, lot 82. Its signature was unread and the illustration is poor
