Project Description

Stag antler manju netsuke of a snake and skull

Carved from the branch point of an antler, the snake winding through the eye sockets

Unsigned. Circa 1870

4.8 cm across

This is by a distinctive hand, recognisable by the drill holes on the reverse. For another very similar netsuke, see the Sotheby’s London catalogue of the Monzino collection, 21st June 1995, lot 175. Two other manju of animal subjects by this artist were in the Hahn collection (illustrated in Davies catalogue, nos. 158 and 159)
