Project Description
Stained Boxwood Netsuke of Handaka Sonja by Fuzuki Tokoku
The partly bald but hirsute rakan, seated in an Indian robe, one shoulder and part of his chest bared, a bracelet around the upper arm which holds his empty bowl. He looks skywards in search of his dragon. Stained green bone ring to the smaller himotoshi
This netsuke appears to be unrecorded. The quality and detail of the carving is astounding, not least the undercutting of the hand touching the ground behind Handaka
Signed Tokoku with silver seal Bairyu. Circa 1910
