Information:

This is one of three masks known by the artist, one a head of a nio in the British Museum, illustrated in Noriko Tsuchiya’s recent book of netsuke, p. 101. The other is also a Gyōdō mask, listed but not illustrated in the Meinertzhagen Card Index (p. 393). It was formerly in the Peter E. Müller collection in Switzerland, published privately, and sold at Matthew Barton, London, 7th June, 2018, lot 91
