Project Description

Wood Netsuke of a Boar by Namboku

With one foreleg raised, the eyes double inlaid in yellow and dark horn

Signed in an oval reserve beneath: Namboku.  Tamba, circa 1850

Length: 4.6 cm

Information:

Fuld records only one boar by this rare Tamba artist, which was in the Katherine Matthies collection, sold at Sotheby’s New York, 25th May 1989, lot 53. It is possible that it is this netsuke; if not it could be the one sold by Klefisch, Cologne, 26th January 2008, lot 195 and again at Bonhams London, 4th November 2020, lot 95, now in a UK collection. The catalogue for that sale lists a third variant, published by Rosemary Bandini in April 2016, no. 12. I have examined the Bonhams netsuke with the present one and it is somewhat larger and rougher, but similar in all other respects
