Wood Netsuke of a Snail on Upturned Bucket by Shigemasa

The body of the snail is arched over the side of the bucket as it tries to descend from the upturned base. The soft flesh is stippled, the upper half of the shell stained dark and polished. The himotoshi are formed by gaps beteen the binding of the bucket and two dislodged staves

Signed with rectilinear characters. Circa 1870
