Project Description

Wood netsuke of a tall South Sea Islander

The hirsute foreigner with lanky arms and legs, dressed only in a skirt and standing holding a staff in one hand and a drumstick in the other for the small drum attached to his belt

Unsigned. Circa 1750

13 cm high

Repair to the left foot

The figure is reminiscent of some tall carvings of Ashinaga and Tenaga.  It appears to be by the same hand as the similar figure in the Behrens collection, no. 813, illustrated on pl XV
