Wood Netsuke of an Eagle and Monkey in the style of Kaigyokusai Masatsugu (Osaka 1813-92)

The powerful raptor pinning its terrified prey to the ground. The feather work is detailed and varied. The eyes of the eagle are double inlaid shell and dark horn, the monkey’s pupils are dark horn

Signed Masatsugu on a shell tablet. Probably Osaka. Circa 1860-1880

Height: 4 cm

The design has much in common with the Hakata precedents by Bokugyūken Toshiharu and his immediate circle. Compare with the very similar example from the Scott Meredith collection, no. 21 in the Barry Davies catalogue
