Project Description

Boxwood Netsuke of an Ox by Tadashige

A well observed, compact netsuke, the stain of the horns, halter and hoofs intentionally rubbed away to provide contrast with the rest. The eye pupils are of inlaid horn

As for many years the artist’s name was mistakenly read as Tadayoshi, Fuld lists all his work under that name, 7 of them reclining oxen, some possibly duplicates. For a similar but probably less subtle comparison, see Davey and Tripp’s catalogue of the Garrett collection, no.222
