Wood Netsuke of Karako with Drum by Hara Shugetsu

Beating the drum which he holds between his legs, an Okame mask tied to the back of his head. The himotoshi are ringed with generous silver mounts.

The glass eyes are inlaid from the back, the mask having been added afterwards. The quality of carving is excellent, with the bonus of the technique for the eyes, the fine silver mounts and a really good signature

Signed on the bottom of the drum: Shugetsu with seal hara. Circa 1840
