Project Description
Wood Netsuke of Ono no Komachi by Sekken
The poetess, celebrated in her youth for her beauty and intelligence, shown as an itinerant old woman, seated with slightly bowed head, her withered dugs of breasts exposed and with her large straw hat hanging behind her, suggestive of a kiku flower. The cord would have passed through the himotoshi in the centre of the bottom and the knot nestled comfortably hidden in the generous cavity between her hat and left elbos
Signed. Circa 1800
Height: 3.7 cm
Fuld lists only one netsuke, of a horse, by an artist of this name. It was in the now disbanded private Inro Museum in Takayama, and is illustrated in Rokusho, no. 27, fig. 42
