Project Description

Wood Netsuke of Tengu no Tamago by Naito Toyomasa (Tamba, 1773-1856)

A classic Toyomasa example, the creature sitting comfortably with its hands resting on the rim of the broken shell and its left wing sweeping around it in an open fan.  Apart from its bird-like beak and feathered body and wings, the ears and long lank hair are human. The eyes are of yellow horn with drilled pupils

Signed on the side of the egg. Tamba, circa 1840
