Project Description

Wood Okimono Netsuke of Rats by Hokyudo Itsumin

An adult, accompanied by its young, holds and gnaws an edamame bean. The adult’s whiskers are well carved in relief and the tail is particularly fine. The eyes are inlays of dark horn, the himotoshi are ringed with stained ivory, and the signature plaque is of the same material

Information:

Fuld lists 3 netsuke of this subject by Itsumin.  It is interesting to compare with the much paler version in Barry Davies Oriental Art’s euphemistically titled ‘Netsuke and Inrō from European Private Collections’, no. 102. The overall treatment is the same, the whiskers are also in relief (a difficult feat achieved by relatively few netsuke carvers), the himotoshi are also ringed in ivory and the signature is on an oval ivory plaque. From my observation of Itsumin’s work, I judge that this is relatively late work, probably around 1860
