4-case Lacquer Ink Cake Inro with Elephant, by Shibata Zeshin

With takamakie decoration of a saddled elephant standing in front of a stand of banana trees, the verso with various inscriptions in relief characters

Signed in seal form on the verso: Zeshin. Scratched signature to one side: zeshin sei

Purchased by the late owner from Barry Davies Oriental Art in 1993

There is another Zeshin inro with the same subject in the Avery Brundage Collection at the Asian Art Museum, San Francisco. Both are derived (back and front) from inro by Ritsuo, 3 examples of which were in the celebrated Baron Takei collection
