Project Description

Narwhal Tusk Manju Netsuke by Ueda Kōhōsai

A hefty section of tusk carved in intaglio with three masks, and fitted with a shibuichi loose ring as an attachment

Signed on the reverse: kohosai kore wo koku with a date of Genji first year, equivalent to 1864 [genji gannen kino-ne shunjitsu]

Diameter: 5.3 cm

Ueda Reikichi records the artist as living in Kawara-machi, Osaka and dying around 1907.  Fuld lists his birth date as around 1869, clearly disproved by the inscription here
