Project Description
Wood Netsuke of a Recumbent Boar, by Sato Masatomo
With somewhat languid expression, its snout pointing skyward
Signed beneath. Nagoya. Circa 1850
Length: 4.9 cm
Private collection, Germany, acquired from a French collection put together between the World Wars
Fuld lists 84 netsuke by this excellent carver, only 4 of them boars. 1 is in the Museo d’arte Orientale, Genova, another is illustrated in Bushell’s The Wonderful World of Netsuke, pl. 13, and another in Cohen’s In Search of Netsuke and Inro, pl. XV, no. 241. The illustration of the last is poor, and at first glance I thought it might be the present netsuke, but the provenance militates against the idea
