Project Description

Rare, possibly unique, lacquered wood netsuke of a tiger, by Yamaguchi Okatori

Signed on a leg, beneath the lacquer. Kyoto. Circa. 1800

This attractive combination of rubbed lacquer layers (gold over black over cinnabar red) is not that common on netsuke.  Notable examples include a Daruma attributed to Ritsuo in the first Wrangham sale at Bonhams London, 9th November 2010, lot 136, and a Hotei in the British Museum (illustrated in Noriko Tsuchiya, Netsuke, 100 miniature masterpieces from Japan, 2014, pp. 70-71).  Fuld lists only one wood tiger by the artist, illustrated in an advertisement of Douglas Wright’s in Arts of Asia, 8/3, p. 35
